Honoring a Lost Friend
Roberto Schaefer, ASC, helps bring the best-selling novel The Kite Runner to the big screen.


(...) In addition of ground action, the kite tournament includes aerial perspective of the city and spectators - the kites POV, in effect. This involved a number of elements, including three days of greenscreen photography of kite flyers and spectators on rooftops, taken at extreme angles. To capture plates for the visual effects department, the producers brought in a Flying-Cam, partly because the Chinese government allows only military personnel to use helicopters. Hovering at 300', the Flying-Cam carried a Canon EOS 1DS Mark II that captured overlapping, 16-megapixel stills of the Kashgar streets, creating a 360 degree bubble of high-resolution coverage. In addition to these digital shots, the visual-effects team used some satellite images from Google Earth, whose image quality is better in some places than others, says Schaefer. It depends on the satellite and what level of detail [that government] will let you see. (...)
